EDEN  Send This Review to a Friend

Low key love stories with everyday sort of characters can turn out to be special, as does “Eden,” directed by Declan Recks and written by Eugene O’Brien based on his stage drama. It is a matter of following the lives of a couple whose 10th anniversary has cast a spotlight on the dissatisfaction that the husband and wife are feeling.

Breda (Eileen Walsh) and Billy (Aiden Kelly), who live in a town in Ireland, have two children. The spark has gone out of their marriage, as has the sex. The film bit by bit details the boredom in their lives and their fleeting attempts to do something about it.

Take Billy. He’s attracted to another, Imelda (Sarah Greene). Breda feels forlorn and neglected.

Will they find a way to close the gap in their marriage?

The cast is excellent and the film has a sharp sense of place. Recks keeps the action moving along easily as we follow the couple’s paths, and given that both husband and wife are basically likable, one may wish for them to get a new lease on their marriage. Throughout the filmmaker imbues the drama with a sense of honesty. A Samson Films Limited release.
