GOTHIKA Send This Review to a Friend
Watching Halle Berry should be a treat, but the pleasure is seriously diminished in "Gothika," a cockamamie horror flick that delivers more schlock than shock. Berry plays Dr. Miranda Grey a criminal psychologist working at a prison. Penélope Cruz is the mysterious prisoner Chloe, who desperately tries to convince the good doctor that she is being raped in her cell by the devil. One day, after a bizarre incident, Dr. Grey wakes up a psychiatric prisoner herself. What happened?
Finding out what's been going on leads us down a cliched, silly supernatural path that leaves one amazed that a film this dumb could come off the assembly line. Other cast members include Charles S. Dutton as the doctor's husband and Robert Downey Jr. as her medical colleague with a thing for her. Mathieu Kassovitz, who has done better work with the French film "Hate," perpetrates this one from a screenplay by Sebastian Gutierrez.
The only consolation is that Berry is on screen a good part of the time, although she never even looks her best because she is mostly so distraught. A Warner Brothers release.
