SLACKERS  Send This Review to a Friend

There is nothing remotely redeeming about "Slackers," a boring, dumb excuse for a movie. I would add tasteless, but that might suggest elements that could at least be funny. The tastelessness in "Slackers" is merely stupefying.

Set at a fictitious university that must make being a moron its basis for admission, "Slackers" was written by David H. Steinberg and directed by Dewey Nicks. In what passes as a plot nerdy "Cool Ethan" (Jason Schwartzman) blackmails another student, Dave (Devon Sawa), to get him together with Angela (James King), who wouldn't be caught dead with the likes of him. Ethan has discovered Dave and his two pals cheating on an exam, their way of life, and has threatened to expose them unless Dave helps with Angela.

The lowest point of many lows is a cameo by Mamie Van Doren as an aging sexual predator who in her hospital bed wants her mountainous breasts sponged by Ethan. It is painful to see her used so embarrassingly.

Some college films are populated with student creeps who at least make us laugh. These campus misfits are so dull that sitting through the movie ought to earn one a degree in masochism. A Screen Gems release.
