Playwright Liba Vaynberg has attempted a comedy mixing characters on a King Arthur-type television show with their off-camera lives but with feeble results.
“Round Table” isn’t very funny despite the effort at satire. It attempts to spoof the King Arthur myth and examine the characters who do the TV performing and their relationships, but they are not very interesting, which wouldn’t matter if the humor turned out to be hilarious.
There is reliance on amusing costumes and jousting scenes and the cast members give their all but in vain. Director Geordie Broadwater has worked hard too in use of the tiny stage in the intimate Theater C of 59E59 Theaters.
Although “Round Table” is a misfire, credit is due the valiant cast—Matthew Bovee, Craig Wesley Divino, Karl Gregory, Sharina Martin and the playwright Vaynberg. At 59E59 Theaters, 59 East 59th Street. Phone: 646-892-7999. Reviewed October 8, 2019.
